Horst Köhler
After I had already done portraits of Walter Scheel, Richard von Weizsäcker and Roman Herzog, at the ceremonial unveiling at the Office of the President, Horst Köhler decided to entrust me with his official bust for the Office of the President.
On a personal level, working with President Köhler was relaxed and pleasant, but the work still took more than two lengthy morning-long sessions. Our conversation was too excited and animated – it was impossible to define anything that didn’t look completely different a few seconds later.
On a spontaneously arranged third day, I was still going in circles. So, after his sitting, I labored over the piece until everything was just right. At the unveiling in his office, Horst Köhler remarked, “This is what my wife says I look like”.
